Description

The Buddha`s Hand Citron acquired its unique name because of the exotic, large, yellow hand-like fruit it produces. It looks like it just came out of the movie "Creature Feature!" This conversation piece is also prized for its magnificent fragrance. The small growing citrus fruits all year long! As they are usually grown as a potted plant, these plants are not grafted. Citron was probably the first citrus known to Europeans and date back to the Mediterranean area more than 2,000 years. Commercial culture is limited to Israel, Italy, and a few small Greek Islands today, but Citron has remained fairly popular as a dooryard specimen and for cooking. The thick peel is preserved in brine for use in making candied peel for fruitcakes and other such desserts. The juice is not used. It was brought to the New World by Columbus and was grown in Florida when St. Augustine was settled around 1585. It is widely propagated by cuttings but should be grafted.
